Accountants in Ghana must embrace digital transformation, innovation and adaptability to remain relevant in an increasingly technology-driven global economy, Deputy Minister for Education Dr. Clement Apaak has said.

Dr. Apaak made the remarks while presenting the Ministry of Education’s report at the 62nd Annual General Meeting of the Institute of Chartered Accountants Ghana (ICAG) at Mawuli Senior High School in Ho in the Volta Region.

He said rapid advances in technology were reshaping the accounting profession and required practitioners who are agile, forward-looking and able to respond to emerging trends.

“In light of the accelerating pace of technological advancement and digital transformation, the Ministry further emphasised the necessity for graduates to remain adaptable, resilient, and forward-looking in their professional practice,” he said.

Dr. Apaak noted that the growing integration of data analytics, artificial intelligence and digital financial systems was transforming accounting beyond traditional bookkeeping and financial reporting.

“The integration of emerging technologies such as data analytics, artificial intelligence, and digital financial systems into accounting and financial management processes requires practitioners who are not only technically proficient but also agile and responsive to change,” he added.

He warned that professionals who fail to adapt risk becoming irrelevant in a rapidly evolving financial environment.

According to him, modern accountants must also move beyond traditional roles and provide strategic advisory services and innovative solutions to complex financial and governance challenges in both the public and private sectors.

Dr. Apaak commended ICAG for its efforts in strengthening professional standards, accountability and financial governance in the country, describing the collaboration between the Ministry and the Institute as strong and purposeful.

He also praised the Institute’s decision to adopt and promote standards issued by the International Sustainability Standards Board, saying it would improve the quality, consistency and reliability of sustainability reporting.

He said the move would also enhance informed decision-making and support more efficient capital allocation.

Dr. Apaak urged accountants, including newly qualified professionals, to uphold integrity, professionalism and ethical standards, while contributing to Ghana’s socio-economic development and institutional strengthening.
