Popular local musician Jacob Akundoo Atule has urged young people in the Bongo District and across the country to stay away from drugs, warning that substance abuse is destroying lives, limiting opportunities, and undermining the future of the nation’s youth.

Speaking on Bolga FM’s Buuri Malema Sanga programme on June 1, 2026, Mr. Atule expressed concern about the increasing incidence of drug abuse among young people and its impact on families, communities, and national development.

According to him, many talented and promising young people have had their dreams cut short because of addiction and the harmful effects of illicit substances.

“The growing involvement of the youth in drug abuse poses a serious threat to community development and national progress. Many talented and promising young people have either lost their lives or seen their dreams shattered due to addiction and the harmful effects of drugs,” he said.

Mr. Atule encouraged young people to reject drugs and instead focus on education, skills development, entrepreneurship, and other productive activities that can help them build successful and meaningful lives.

“Focus on education, skills development, entrepreneurship, and other productive activities that can help you achieve your aspirations and contribute positively to society,” he advised.

The musician stressed that protecting young people from the dangers of substance abuse requires a collective effort. He called on parents, traditional authorities, religious leaders, civil society organisations, schools, and government agencies to intensify public education on the risks associated with drug use.

He also appealed to individuals involved in the sale and distribution of illicit drugs to stop targeting young people and consider the long-term consequences of their actions on families and communities.

Mr. Atule noted that prevention and awareness remain among the most effective tools for addressing substance abuse and safeguarding the future of the younger generation.

His comments add to growing calls from citizens, community leaders, and public figures for stronger action to address drug abuse, which continues to pose social and developmental challenges in many communities across the country.
