The Bolgatanga Municipal Chairman of the Peasant Farmers Association of Ghana (PFAG), Rev. John Akaribo, has raised concerns over weak implementation and mismanagement within Ghana’s agricultural support systems, saying persistent gaps are undermining government efforts to strengthen food security and support farmers.

Speaking on A1 Radio’s Day Break Upper East programme in Bolgatanga on Wednesday, he said that although government continues to roll out agricultural policies and interventions, poor execution at various levels remains a major obstacle to achieving intended outcomes.

He cited food stock and buffer stock initiatives as key examples, noting that while they are designed to stabilise food supply and support farmers, inefficiencies in their management have limited their effectiveness.

Rev. Akaribo explained that weak coordination and inadequate oversight in the handling of agricultural resources often lead to wastage and reduce the benefits meant for farmers who depend on these systems.

He stressed that although most agricultural policies are well formulated, the main challenge lies in implementation, accountability, and the management of public resources at different levels of delivery.

“Our greediness is causing us, but government has good plans,” he said, adding that policy intentions are frequently weakened by human factors within implementation structures.

He further noted that delays and inefficiencies in distributing inputs and managing storage systems continue to undermine farmers’ confidence and weaken the impact of national agricultural programmes.

According to him, this pattern of weak execution risks eroding progress in the agricultural sector if not urgently addressed, especially as farmers depend heavily on timely and properly managed support systems.

Rev. Akaribo called for stronger accountability mechanisms, improved coordination among implementing institutions, and tighter oversight of agricultural interventions to ensure efficiency in resource use.

He added that agriculture remains central to national development and urged authorities to ensure that public investments in the sector are managed transparently and directed strictly toward their intended purpose.
