The University of Technology and Applied Sciences (UTAS), Navrongo, has been selected as the Upper East regional hub for the Government of Ghana’s flagship One Million Coders initiative.
Vice Chancellor Professor Albert Luguterah announced the development during the university’s 7th Congregation ceremony, describing it as a major boost to the institution’s digital transformation agenda.
“UTAS has been selected as a regional hub for the government’s flagship One Million Coders initiative. Two hundred laptops have been allocated for phase one training,” he disclosed.
He said the programme aligns directly with the university’s mandate of advancing technology and applied computing education.
Professor Luguterah further revealed that the Ghana Education Service had accredited the university’s School of Science, Mathematics and Technology Education as a Teacher Licensure Examination Centre.
“The approval reduces travel costs to trainees in the Upper East and North East Regions and expands UTAS’ service to the pre-tertiary sector,” he explained.
The Vice Chancellor noted that digital skills development remains critical to Ghana’s future competitiveness and economic growth. He stressed that postgraduate education and advanced research continue to be central to the university’s mission.
“UTAS is not only growing; UTAS is evolving. It is emerging as a university where knowledge is created, not merely consumed; where research is applied, not shelved,” he said.
Professor Luguterah expressed confidence that the One Million Coders initiative would equip young people with the digital skills needed to thrive in an increasingly technology-driven world.
