Former New Patriotic Party (NPP) Parliamentary Candidate for Bolgatanga Central and current Regional Secretary, Elvis Figo Awonekai, has officially declared his intention to contest for the position of Regional Chairman of the party in the Upper East Region.

In a statement issued on June 16, 2026, Mr. Awonekai announced his decision to seek the mandate of party delegates, pledging to unite the party, strengthen its structures and position it for victory in the 2028 general elections.

“It is not the time to retreat after defeat; it is time to rise, restructure and reclaim power,” he stated.

Mr. Awonekai expressed gratitude to the current regional executives for what he described as their service, sacrifice and selflessness to the party over the years, promising to build on the foundation they have laid.

The aspiring Regional Chairman emphasised his long-standing service within the NPP, noting that he has risen through the ranks of the party from the grassroots level.

According to him, his political journey began as a Polling Station Secretary and Chairman before serving as Constituency Communications Officer and Constituency IT Coordinator. He later became Deputy Regional Secretary in 2018 while also serving as Regional IT Coordinator. In 2022, he was elected Regional Secretary and subsequently contested as the party’s parliamentary candidate.

“I have fully integrated the party’s legacy and I am ready to lead,” he declared.

Outlining his vision for the party, Mr. Awonekai identified unity as his foremost priority, stressing that his experience at various levels of the party gives him a deep understanding of the challenges confronting the NPP in the region.

“Having served at all levels, I know the issues on the ground. I am the one to unite us, end divisions, and make every constituency stronger and ready for Election 2028,” he said.

He also pledged to improve resource mobilization and distribution across the region to support early political activities and strengthen party structures from the polling station level upwards.

“Through my many years of service and network with those who believe in the NPP, and with my proven mobilisation abilities, I will ensure resources are sourced and effectively distributed to every polling station, electoral area and constituency across the region,” he stated.

Mr. Awonekai further outlined plans to strengthen the party’s Youth, Women, Research and Communications wings, which he described as critical to the NPP’s future success in the region.

“Our future as a party in the region rests on the Youth, Women, Research and Communications wings. I will continue from the laid foundation to restructure these wings into a strong election-winning machine,” he said.

He indicated that under his leadership, the wings would receive training, support for membership drives, research capabilities and strategic communication tools to enhance their effectiveness.

The Regional Secretary announced that he would begin engagements with stakeholders across the region in the coming weeks as part of his campaign for the chairmanship position.

Mr. Awonekai is contesting on the campaign message of being “Experienced, Accessible and Fearless,” which he believes reflects his readiness to lead the party in opposition and prepare it for a return to power.

His declaration marks the beginning of what is expected to be a keenly contested race for the leadership of the NPP in the Upper East Region ahead of the party’s internal elections.
