Former New Patriotic Party (NPP) Bongo Constituency Chairman aspirant, Eric Akurugu, has reaffirmed his commitment to promoting unity and reconciliation within the party despite his defeat in the recently concluded constituency executive elections.
Mr. Akurugu said the outcome of the election does not diminish his dedication to the growth and success of the NPP in Bongo, emphasising that the party can only achieve electoral victory through unity, strong grassroots leadership, and collective commitment.
Speaking after the election, he said his decision to contest the chairmanship position was motivated by a desire to rebuild the party, unite members, and position the NPP for success in future elections.
According to him, his experience as the party’s former Second Vice Chairman and his eight years of service as a government appointee have equipped him with the leadership skills and practical experience needed to contribute meaningfully to the party’s development.
Mr. Akurugu revealed that during his campaign, he visited all 38 electoral areas in the Bongo Constituency, where he engaged polling station executives and party members to understand their concerns and aspirations.
He said one issue that consistently emerged during the engagements was the urgent need to restore unity and heal divisions within the party.
“There is a need for someone who can galvanise the membership and bring everybody together for the common good of the party,” he stated.
As part of his vision, Mr. Akurugu proposed the establishment of a Constituency Reconciliation Committee to engage former executives, polling station officers, party supporters, and aggrieved members in dialogue aimed at resolving differences and rebuilding trust.
He expressed confidence that promoting reconciliation and inclusiveness would strengthen the party’s structures, improve cooperation among members, and better position the NPP for future electoral contests.
Reflecting on the party’s electoral history, Mr. Akurugu acknowledged that the NPP has not won the Bongo parliamentary seat since the beginning of Ghana’s Fourth Republic in 1992. However, he remains optimistic that with unity, discipline, commitment, and teamwork, the party can reverse its fortunes.
He congratulated the newly elected constituency executives and urged all party members to put the elections behind them and work together towards a common objective.
Mr. Akurugu assured supporters that he would continue to serve the party in any capacity and remain committed to efforts aimed at strengthening the NPP and improving its chances of winning future elections in the Bongo Constituency.
