A total of 2,988 birds have been distributed to poultry farmers in the Bongo District under the government’s Nkoko Nkitinkiti initiative to boost poultry production, improve food security and increase household incomes.
The birds were handed over by the District Chief Executive (DCE), Diana Asoketarige Ayamga, on behalf of the Government of Ghana and the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA) under the government’s Feed Ghana Programme. The intervention forms part of the Food and Agriculture Organization’s (FAO) Food Security Response in Northern Ghana Project.
The project is being implemented in 12 communities across the district and comprises crop and livestock components aimed at improving household livelihoods, increasing agricultural productivity and strengthening food security.
Under the livestock component, 18 beneficiaries in each participating community will receive 50 birds to establish or expand their poultry enterprises.
The first batch of birds was distributed to beneficiaries in Gowrie, Dua, Akutabongo-Adaboya and Beo-Sapooro.
Speaking during the distribution, Mrs. Ayamga urged beneficiaries to properly care for the birds to ensure the success and sustainability of the project.
She advised farmers to provide adequate feed, clean water, proper housing and routine veterinary care while adopting measures to prevent disease outbreaks.
Mrs. Ayamga said the government remains committed to supporting farmers through practical agricultural interventions that improve food production, strengthen food security and promote economic empowerment, particularly in rural communities.
She noted that the Ministry of Food and Agriculture, together with its development partners, would continue to implement programmes aimed at improving farmers’ livelihoods and promoting sustainable agricultural development.
The DCE also commended the Bongo District Department of Agriculture for coordinating the implementation of the project.
She expressed confidence that the initiative would increase poultry production, improve household incomes and contribute to agricultural development across the district.
