The Water Resources Commission (WRC) has alerted communities along the White Volta River and adjoining areas to prepare for a planned controlled spillage of water from the Bagre Dam in Burkina Faso beginning Tuesday, August 11, 2026.
The planned exercise, however, will depend on the reservoir reaching a water level of 234.00 metres.
In a notice providing an update on the dam’s water level, the Commission said SONABEL, the operator of the Bagre Dam, reported that the reservoir had reached 232.93 metres as of Tuesday, August 4, representing an estimated filling rate of 62.77 per cent.
According to the WRC, SONABEL plans to commence controlled spillage from August 11 if the reservoir reaches the 234.00-metre threshold.
The Commission has consequently urged communities along the White Volta River and adjoining areas to take the necessary precautions ahead of the possible spillage.
Residents have also been advised to strictly follow safety guidelines and directives issued by their respective local assemblies and other relevant agencies.
Communities along the White Volta in northern Ghana are particularly vulnerable to rising water levels during periods of heavy rainfall and releases from the Bagre Dam.
