The Forum for African Women Educationalists (FAWE) Ghana Chapter is stepping up efforts to remove financial and other barriers preventing girls and young women from accessing tertiary education, particularly in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields.
Emmanuel Gazari, Field Officer for FAWE Ghana Chapter, said many girls have the ability and determination to succeed academically but continue to be held back by limited opportunities and inadequate support.
According to him, FAWE Ghana’s objective is to ensure that girls have the same opportunities as their male counterparts to access quality education, develop their talents and contribute to national development.
Mr. Gazari said the organisation has been implementing its current initiative for the past three months, identifying and supporting disadvantaged young people, with particular attention to girls facing financial and other barriers to education.
He noted that although women and girls continue to demonstrate their capabilities across different sectors, many still struggle to access the resources and opportunities needed to advance their education and careers.
The initiative seeks to expand opportunities for disadvantaged young people to pursue tertiary education, particularly in STEM-related fields, while encouraging more girls and young women to develop skills that can improve their economic prospects.
Mr. Gazari said investing in girls’ education has benefits beyond the individual, as educated women can contribute to the development of their families, communities and the country.
He therefore called on parents, caregivers, teachers and community leaders to encourage girls to pursue their educational ambitions and take advantage of opportunities available to them.
FAWE Ghana is also encouraging eligible young women and other disadvantaged young people to explore educational opportunities available under its programmes.
Mr. Gazari said removing barriers to girls’ education and providing them with equal opportunities would enable more young women to become professionals, entrepreneurs and community leaders while contributing meaningfully to Ghana’s development.
