The government is set to undertake 18 road projects covering 267.52 kilometres across the Upper East Region under its Big Push infrastructure programme, Roads and Highways Minister Kwame Governs Agbodza has announced.
Mr. Agbodza said authorisation for the projects is expected to be issued next week to begin procurement, with contractors expected to mobilise to project sites within the following month.
He announced the projects during a stakeholders’ engagement at Desert Pastures in Bolgatanga on Friday, August 14, 2026, as part of President John Dramani Mahama’s Resetting Ghana Tour.
According to the minister, the programme will cover roads connecting communities, farming areas, markets, schools and health facilities across the region.
Mr. Agbodza said the 267.52-kilometre allocation represents a significant increase from the approximately 50 to 60 kilometres previously allocated to the region under some road programmes.
He said President Mahama had directed that the Big Push programme should extend beyond major trunk roads to feeder roads serving rural and farming communities.
Among the projects are the upgrading of the Gurumongo-Mayoro and Gbedema-Kandiga feeder roads and the rehabilitation of the Saboro-Wusunga and Catholic-Kpandem Health feeder roads.
Other roads listed under the programme include Chuchuliga-Awulansa, Kandiga Junction-Sirigu, Zaare Market-Zeseri, Yakubu Corner Junction-Yakubu Corner-Kpatia and Asonge-Perlungu.
The Y Junction-Domeabra-Tempane, Basyonde-Kongo, Bongo Central-Namoo Border, Zebilla Hospital-Tanga, Zebilla SHS Junction-Kukore, Zaare-Nyariga-Ayonore, Zuarungu-Tongo, Bawku-Narungu, Pusiga township and Navrongo-Pungu-Natungnia roads are also included.
Two steel bridges are planned along the Paga-Sirigu route, including a 30-metre bridge over the Kolalibali River and a 36-metre bridge over the Gugura River.
The programme will also cover roads around Bawku, including Asorekobisi-Guinea Fowl Junction-Nyariga Canal, Extee-Azimson Bypass, Azorebisi-Nyariga Junction, Magori-Gentriga, Mogoni-Tampizua, Sakpare Chief Palace and Nidi-Naranzua.
Mr. Agbodza also provided updates on major road projects already underway or being revived in the region.
He said work on the Navrongo-Chuchuliga-Tumu corridor was progressing, while the government was taking steps to revive the Bolgatanga-Bawku-Pulmakom road project.
According to him, contractors have returned to the Bolgatanga-Bawku-Pulmakom road, with the government targeting completion in 2027.
The minister also announced plans to rehabilitate and reconstruct the Bolgatanga-Tamale highway, which he described as heavily deteriorated and unsafe for motorists.
Sections of the Eastern Corridor, particularly around Nakpanduri, Garu and Kulungugu, are also expected to undergo major rehabilitation.
The government says the road projects are intended to improve connectivity across the Upper East Region and facilitate the movement of people, agricultural produce and other goods.
