MTN Ghana says it will invest approximately US$1.1 billion over the next three years to expand its network, improve service quality and strengthen the resilience of its infrastructure across the country. Of the amount, about US$380 million will be invested in 2026 as part of the telecommunications company’s efforts to meet the growing demand for connectivity and digital services.
The Senior Manager in charge of Base Station Subsystems at MTN Ghana, Emmanuel Kwei Afutu, disclosed this during a media and stakeholders forum in Tamale for journalists working in the Northern, Savannah, Upper East and North East regions as the company marks its 30th anniversary of operations in Ghana.
He said the investment forms part of MTN’s commitment to building a stronger, more reliable and resilient network capable of connecting more people to economic and social opportunities.
“Over the next three years, MTN commits to investing approximately $1.1 billion, including about $380 million this year, in 2026, to expand our network, to improve service quality and to strengthen the resilience of our infrastructure,” he said.
Mr. Afutu said MTN currently has more than 31 million subscribers across Ghana and acknowledged that although network coverage has improved significantly over the years, challenges still remain.
He said the company is therefore expanding its infrastructure, particularly in underserved areas. In the northern part of the country, he said MTN is deploying new sites across the four regions represented at the forum.
According to him, 38 new sites will be constructed in the Northern Region, 17 in the Savannah Region, 14 in the Upper East Region and 11 in the North East Region. Nationwide, MTN plans to construct 500 new sites, which Mr. Afutu described as one of the company’s largest network expansion programmes in recent years.
He said the success of the investment should not only be measured by the number of sites constructed but by the opportunities connectivity creates for communities.
“The real question is, what do these sites make possible? That a farmer can reach the market, that a young person can access online learning, that a business can receive digital payments, irrespective of where you are,” he said.
Mr. Afutu said improved connectivity would also support families to remain connected and help communities in areas with security challenges to avoid network “dark spots.” He added that MTN’s investment was also responding to the increasing use of digital services, particularly mobile money.
He said in the first half of 2026, mobile money value grew by 44.4 percent year-on-year, while active mobile users increased by 3.1 percent and transaction volumes and mobile revenue both grew by 23.3 percent.
Mr. Afutu said the company was also prioritising cybersecurity and data protection as more Ghanaians increasingly rely on digital platforms. He said MTN’s long-term objective was to ensure that connectivity translated into opportunities for education, healthcare, agriculture, business and financial inclusion.
The forum formed part of activities marking MTN Ghana’s 30 years of operations and provided an opportunity for the company to engage the media and stakeholders on its contribution to Ghana’s digital transformation.
