The recognition, announced in a letter dated October 14, 2026, acknowledges his contribution to expanding educational opportunities for underprivileged children and young people, particularly in underserved communities.
The award ceremony is scheduled for November 19, 2026, at the Alisa Hotel in Accra, under the theme, “Honouring Purpose-Driven Giving for a Better Ghana.”
Organised by The Business Executive, the Ghana Philanthropy Awards recognises individuals, organisations and institutions for their contributions to philanthropy, charitable initiatives, social welfare and national development.
Rev. Fr. Dr Awinongya’s selection comes as Regentropfen University College celebrates its 10th anniversary, marking a decade of efforts to improve access to tertiary education in the Upper East Region.
Established in 2016 at Namoo in the Bongo District, the institution began operations with 46 students and has since grown to approximately 1,300 students in 2026.
The university college was founded to bring higher education closer to young people in rural and underserved communities, where the financial and logistical demands of pursuing tertiary education elsewhere can present significant challenges.
Over the past decade, the institution has expanded its academic programmes, infrastructure and training opportunities.
Initially accredited to offer five diploma and five undergraduate degree programmes, Regentropfen University College has expanded its academic offerings to five diploma programmes, 10 undergraduate degree programmes and three postgraduate programmes.
The programmes cover disciplines including business, computing, education, health and agriculture, with an emphasis on practical training and skills development.
During the university college’s 10th anniversary celebration in October 2026, Rev. Fr. Dr Awinongya reaffirmed his commitment to using education to promote talent, entrepreneurship and community development.
He emphasised that tertiary institutions must go beyond awarding certificates to equip graduates with the knowledge and practical skills needed to create opportunities and contribute to national development.
The institution has also outlined plans to expand postgraduate education, strengthen research and industry partnerships, and deepen international collaboration.
It is additionally pursuing a charter that would allow it to operate as an autonomous university, subject to the necessary regulatory approvals.
Beyond the institution’s academic expansion, Rev. Fr. Dr Awinongya’s educational initiatives have focused on improving opportunities for students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
The Ghana Philanthropy Awards organisers say their selection process involves nominations and independent evaluation of contributions to society.
The recognition places the Regentropfen University College founder among individuals selected for acknowledgement at this year’s ceremony for their contributions to philanthropy and social development.
The fifth Ghana Philanthropy Awards ceremony will take place on November 19, 2026, in Accra.
