Presidential Candidate for the Peoples National Convention, Dr. Edward Mahama has said he will not be the leader to see the dissolution of PNC, a political party founded by a Head of state.

General Secretary of the Convention Peoples Party Nii Armah Akonfrah has been reported as saying the merger between the Convention Peoples Party and Peoples National Convention could be made possible if the PNC is totally dissolved.

But in an interview on A1 Radio’s Day Break Upper East Show, the PNC Presidential candidate who is currently on a ‘thank you tour’ in the Upper East Region said he will not oversee the total dissolution of a party he has over the years toiled to build.

“Why should I dissolve myself? This party was founded by a former head of state. CPP was given in April or May 2000 to confuse Ghanaians and they succeeded in doing that. The new forces we are campaigning with do not know Kwame Nkrumah except some of us who are propagating him. So let’s not talk much about this, the ball is in their court to make the right decision.” Dr. Mahama said.

He mentioned that if the merger is agreed on, he will agree to relinquish his position as flag bearer to running mate if only there is an agreement to file in the name of the Peoples National Convention.

Dr. Edward Mahama was however emphatic that he will agree for filling on the ticket of the CPP if only they agree to make him the Presidential candidate

“I love my party enough to subdue my personal ambition for the growth of my political party. If they want us to come together and they want to produce the presidential candidate then we have to file on the ticket of the PNC but if they love their party that much and will want us to file on the CPP ticket then I have to be the Presidential Candidate.

Meanwhile Chairman of the PNC Bernard Mornah said the decision to go into a merger with the Convention Peoples Party was taken at the party’s national delegates congress and duly communicated to the CPP and hence an official response is expected from the CPP in this regard notwithstanding the indications of a pre-condition of merger made by Nii Armah Akonfrah.

Mr. Mornah added that the Peoples National Convention is firmly rooted in staying focused and mobilizing support from across the country in order to make the party stronger and to stand out as the dominant political party to capture power in the event of any merger.
