New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Parliamentary candidate for Bolgatanga central constituency, Rex Asanga has observed that the Upper East region has not seen the needed development it deserved due to dormancy on the part of Members of Parliament from the region.

According to him, the MPs from the region who are mostly from the governing National Democratic Congress are not working in the interest of their constituents but rather the interest of their pay masters and themselves.

The Upper East region has 15 constituencies with NDC occupying 13, NPP and the People’s National Convention (PNC) managing one each. Mr. Asanga bemoaned the unvocal nature of MPs from the region during his interaction with beneficiaries of a holiday classes organized by Northern Patriots in Research and Advocacy (NORPRA).

“It is so sad that our MPs are not working together as one group of people who would constitute themselves as a voice for our region. They ought to have been the first advocacy voice to speak on our behalf.”

Answering questions from the students with regards to government delay in releasing grants for feeding students in the Senior High Schools in Northern Ghana, Mr. Asanga was of the view that government has placed less priority on the sector hence the delay. The NPP parliamentary candidate blamed Members of Parliament in the region especially MPs whose constituencies link the Bolga-Bawku road for their failure in playing a pivotal role in ensuring the road is worked on.

The 7th edition of NORPRA holiday classes brought together about 130 students who might have traveled to southern Ghana during the long vacation in search of non-existent jobs.

Executive Director of NORPRA, Bismark Ayorogo applauded the parliamentary candidate for his support and words of encouragement shared with the students. Adding his voice, Mr. Ayorogo said MPs and ministers who hail from the three regions of the north lack commitment to development and are the contributory factor to the widening gap of development between the North and South.

New Patriotic Party’s flagbearer, Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo Addo recently promised to provide an irrigation dam in each village of the three regions of the north to guarantee an all year farming. Speaking on the issue, Mr. Ayorogo stated that NORPRA has carried out a study and realized that the one village, one dam proposal is feasible.

“Those of you who have been listening to news this days I am saying it whether you like NPP or not, whether you like Nana Akuffo Addo or not I have done the consultation, I have led the civil society organizations and I have challenged many people that they can go into the internet and google for CSOs advocacy for one community, one dam policy. So the flagbearer is speaking the minds of many farmers and many civil society organizations.”
