Election 2016: 1000 Women to March for Peace in Each Region

Women Situation Room-Ghana has revealed that as part of their activities to peaceful co-existence before, during and after the 2016 election, they will mobilize 1000 women in each of the 10 regions of Ghana in a march simultaneously to sensitize every Ghanaian, most especially politicians on the need for peace by promoting civilized campaigns which will focus on policy issues that will contribute to the development of the country.

WSR-Ghana is a women’s peace building mechanism that mobilizes women dedicated to promoting free, fair, transparent and credible elections through a non-partisan election observation to ensure peace in the sub-region, as part it cooperate responsibility in building peace.

Addressing some selected media practitioners in the country on the theme ‘Responsible Reporting and Reporting with a Gender lens,’ the national coordinator of Women Situation Room Madam Adwoa Bame, advised the media to be proactive in their reportage as the country prepares to go to the polls on December 7. According to her, the media play important roles in our society and country at large especially in making sure peace is maintained on violent prone electoral center’s before, during and after the elections.

“For now, there is a doubt whether Ghana as a country Ghana can conduct another practically peaceful and decent election that would be accepted by the main contestants and the country at large after December 7. So one particular day we the women of Ghana are saying, we the women of Ghana want peace and we are calling everybody including the politicians and the youth to make sure this election is peaceful,” she said.

However, she stated that in as much as the WSR wants Ghana’s peace to be maintained, they equally want women to actively get involved in politics.

WSR was initiated by the Angie Brooks International Center and implemented in Liberia during its 2011 presidential and legislative elections; it has its branches in some other African countries.

WSR-Ghana is a women’s peace building mechanism that mobilizes women dedicated to promoting free, fair, transparent and credible elections through a non-partisan election observation to ensure peace in the sub-region.
