Let’s avoid the bureaucracy in public offices – Head of LGS
Head of Local Government Service Dr. Nana Ato Arthur have instructed heads of Local Government Services in the Upper East Region to drive the policies approved for implementation by the Local Government Service Council (LGSC) to deepen Ghana’s Decentralization Programme.
He made the pronouncement during his familiarization and engagement tour with the Heads of Local Government Service in the region.
“Let us therefore, have a change of attitude and work with utmost dedication and commitment for the rest of the staff in our MMDAs to emulate.”
According to Dr. Arthur, excessive bureaucracy in the discharge of staff duties at their various MMDAs, can result in development lagging behind, Instead of been proactive in the discharge of their activities.
He further expressed dissatisfaction over the laxity of some Unit Heads and Departmental Heads who are supposed to ensure that official duties are discharged within a certain time.
“We still have a lot to pursue to harness the benefit of decentralization towards improving our service delivery in meeting the felt needs of our people. It is on this score that I count on you all to engage in introspection with the objective of reviewing our previous performances in order to bring development to our various communities,” he said
Dr. Authur said one of his vision as the new Head of Local Government Service, is to promote ICT to improve Revenue Mobilization in the MMDAs and to have a Planning Units of the RCCs and MMDAs strengthened to be able to compile a reliable database on the revenue potentials of the various MMDAs.
On his part, the Upper East Regional Minister Rockson Ayine Bukari requested that the Head of Local Government Service looks into staff welfare, on the need to resource them to attract and retain adequate staff especially senior officers to enable them prosecute their mandate of oversight function.
“I want to appeal to the head of service that in the upper east region, we need a lot of support from your office, we need directors, we need some other supporting staff because the upper east region is one of the youngest region and we think that we need people to come and think for we the politicians. I have always believed that, we occupy positions and you people occupy power. You must think for us, as we also do our work,”
However, the regional Minister indicated that accommodation of Staff should be looked because the lack of it is affecting productivity.
