The Upper East Regional Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Jonathan Abdallah Salifu, says major infrastructure projects including the proposed Upper East airport and a regional stadium are advancing under government plans, with key budgetary and preparatory milestones already underway.

Speaking on A1 Radio’s Daybreak Upper East Show, Mr. Salifu said government has made progress on documentation and land acquisition processes for the proposed Bolgatanga airport, adding that technical engagements with relevant aviation authorities are far advanced.

“Since we came into government, we have not slept over that airport,” he said. “Documentation and everything regarding the airport locally is done. The land is no more in dispute. Industrial plan, everything.”

He added that officials from the Ghana Airports Company Limited have already visited the project site as part of preparatory assessments, and expressed optimism that construction could soon begin.

According to him, the airport project is part of broader national aviation expansion efforts, which include upgrades to existing facilities and the development of new airports across the country.

“As I speak to you, Ghana Airports Company officials have visited several times. The next time the President is in the region, he will cut sod for the commencement of the airport,” he said.

Mr. Salifu also addressed concerns about the absence of a regional stadium project in recent budget allocations for the Upper East Region. He said clarification from the Ministry of Youth and Sports indicates that the region’s stadium is scheduled under the 2027 budget cycle.

“When the three stadiums were mentioned in the budget, I sought clarification from the Sports Minister. He said ours will be part of the 2027 budget because government will build three stadiums every year,” he said.

He added that the assurance reflects a phased national sports infrastructure programme aimed at improving facilities across regions over time.

Mr. Salifu further referenced ongoing commitments under the National Democratic Congress manifesto, including plans to improve road connectivity by linking district capitals to regional capitals and enhancing inter-regional road networks to support economic activity and mobility.

He said the Upper East Region stands to benefit significantly from these infrastructure interventions, which he described as critical to long-term development and regional integration.
