Ghana Police LogoThe Upper East Regional Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Thomas Agbanyo has advised members of the public not to pay monies to Police officers before granting police enquiry bail to people in police custody.

He noted that there were instances where members of the public in their anxiety to get relations out of police custody, desperately woo police personnel into accepting monies from them to speed up the bailing process and said such acts infringed on quality of policing.

He said the 48 hours presented by the country’s constitution for detaining persons in police cells did not apply to all cases, and mentioned first degree felonies such as rape, murder, defilement, and treasonable offences among others as cases that the police could not grant bail except an order from a competent court of jurisdiction.

Mr Agbanyo who was speaking on a Bolgatanga-based radio station said members of the public had every right to challenge any police officer seeking to take money before effecting bail.

He advised members of the public to refrain from acts intended to bribe police officers in order to get bail and said the police equally had a constitutional obligation to arrest anybody or persons who induce them with bribes.

On the drastic reduction of crime wave in the region, Mr Agbanyo indicated that the police administration had adopted stringent strategies to ceil potential avenues criminals use to operate and said motorbike theft and snatching, mobile phones snatching and general burglary had reduced following vigilance on the part of the police administration and cooperation from members of the public.

He appealed to the general public to make available information to the police on criminals and their activities and gave the assurance of police protection of informants and rewards thereon.
