The Minister for Finance, Ken Ofori Atta  has announced an increase in Capitation grants for Basic Schools in the country.

Beginning from January, 2018, all public basic schools in Ghana are entitled to receive GH₵10.00 per an enrolled pupil per academic year to be used primarily for the running of the schools.

The amount represents a GH₵1.00 increase from the current GH₵9.00 being paid by the government to all the public basic schools as capitation grant.

The budget was under the theme ‘Putting Ghana Back to Work’.

According to the Finance Minister, the increase in the capitation grant is in fulfillment of the government’s promise to make basic education free and ensure participation by all.

Capitation grant under the leadership of President Akufo-Addo in 2017 saw a 100% increase from an initial GH₵4.50p to GH₵9.00.
