Bongo: Chief wins District Best Farmer award

The divisional of Gowrie-Kasingo in the Bongo District of the Upper East Region, Naba Nsobila Akanobre on Friday December 1, became the first chief to be adjudged the overall district best farmer in the Bongo District.

Born on 12th March 1957, Naba Akanobre’s occasion is farming with his farms located at Vea and Gowrie, all in the Bongo district. He is into both crop and livestock farming. He owes 42 cattle, 26 sheep, 30 goats, 8 donkeys, 34 guinea fowls and 58 local fowls.

For his prize, he took home a tricycle, a radio set, wax print, knapsack sprayer, wellington boots, 2 cutlasses, a pick axe and a certificate.

Presenting to him his certificate, the District Chief Executive of Bongo, Peter Ayinbisa Ayamga, commended the chief for his hard work which earned him the ward. According to the DCE, the remarkable achievement of the chief should serve as enough motivation to many especially the youth to also go into farming not only for food but also as a business.

He, therefore, called on all and sundry to take advantage of government’s planting for food and jobs programme and into farming. He said the programme seeks to increase production levels of maize by 30%, rice by 49%, soya beans by 25% and sorghum by 28% through the provision of inputs including seeds and fertilizers as well as extension services to farmers. The programme is also expected to provide about 750,000 jobs for the youth to prevent migration of the youth in search of non-existing jobs.

Mr. Ayinbisa announced that a total of 2,213 farmers including women, men and youth received fertilizers including improved seeds. He further disclosed that the district received and distributed to farmers, 9,390 bags of NPK, 4,420 bags of sulphate of ammonia, 1,385 bags of Urea and 290 sachets of tomato and pepper seeds.

This year’s celebration which was on the theme: “Farming for food and jobs,” saw a total of 9 farmers including 3 women receive awards in the district. Abasibila Abunkeka from Tadongo was adjudged as the first runner up while Awine Agoore from Namoo-Awale was adjudged the second runner up.

Naba Baba Salif Lemyaruum could not hide his feelings when he said: “I personally know the chief and I know what he  is doing, what he can do and what he has and so it’s no wonder that he’s been chosen to win the first award.”
