Bolgatanga Municipal,two others score zero percent in the fight against Open Defecation

Bolgatanga and Kassena-Nankana Municipal and Nabdam district assemblies, all in the Upper East Region have scored zero percent in the fight against Open Defecation.

Meanwhile, Garu-Tempane district topped all the 13 assemblies in the region with forty-one percent making it the best performing district in the region in fighting open defecation.

This was revealed at the launch of Social Norms Campaign in Bolgatanga on Thursday. The campaign is a component of the Open Defecation Free Ghana Campaign; an initiative of the government of Ghana with support from the United Nation’s Children Fund (UNICEF)-Ghana.

It is aimed at creating awareness that open defecation is dangerous and affects personal and collective well-being.

Upper East Region Currently leads in open defecation in Ghana with about 82% of people in the region engaging in the practice.

In what seems like a trigger, all the 13 municipal and district chief executives with the regional minister as their superintendent at the launch of Social Norms Campaign, pledged their support to end the menace in their respective assemblies.

The Regional Minister, Rockson Ayine Bukari, whose speech the Chief Director at the Regional Coordinating Council, Alhaji Mohammed Azonko delivered, charged all the Municipal and District Chief Executives to ensure the region achieves open defecation free status by 2019.

“The power to deal with this issue, rest firmly with the assemblies. From planning point of view, nobody is supposed to be given approval for a plan to put up any structure or infrastructure, if there is not incorporated into it a sanitary facility”

Meanwhile, the region was commended for being the only region in the country to achieve beyond the Open Defecation Free target under the Government of Ghana- UNICEF WASH program.

According to Charles Nachinab, Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Officer, on behalf of UNICEF-Ghana, said the Upper East Region have gone “beyond the required 100% to achieve 134 ODFs against a target of 127” this year.

Mr. Nachinab entreated the regional minister and other stakeholders to adopt strategies and commits resources to achieve and ODF region by the target year. “It is indeed possible to attain region-wide ODF with the requisite political will and resources”

UNICEF on the occasion reiterated the passion to support government achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.
