Aspiring regional executives of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Upper East Region who have declared their intentions to capture all the fifteen parliamentary seats in the region in the 2020 general elections, should they be elected, may have to rethink their target because, the incumbent acting chairman, Mohammed Murtala, has said their target is highly impossible to achieve.
Describing the target capturing the remaining twelve seats currently being occupied by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) as over ambitious, Mr. Murtala explained that Upper East Region is the strong hold of the NDC and for any aspiring executive to suggest they aim at capturing all plus the three seats of the NPP is practically impossible.
The acting chairman who said this at a news conference in Bolgatanga on Thursday prior to his vetting, said his target is to win seven or eight seats and achieve at least fifty per cent votes for the president.
He said: “What they are saying about targeting all the fifteen seats, they are just playing to the gallery, it is not possible. NDC is a stronghold in the Upper East Region whether we like it or not. We have to start it small small by getting them [people] small small but if they say they are targeting [all the seats], they are not sincere to themselves because it can never happen. We want it that way but it can never be possible. That’s why I’m targeting half of the seats; seven or eight seats. I mean, there is sense in it but targeting all the fifteen is highly impossible,”
Counting on his role in organizing a fundraising ceremony for the party in Accra, visiting all the fifteen constituencies after assuming his acting position when the substantive chairman, Adams Mahama died, Mr. Murtala was confident he will win the race.
He advised all contenders to conduct their campaigns devoid of insults, lies and foul language.
