A total of 53,887 candidates who obtained Grade 9 in English Language, Mathematics or both subjects in the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) have been given the opportunity to secure schools through the self-placement system.
Deputy Minister of Education Dr. Clement Abas Apaak announced the decision during the release of the 2026 Computerised School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS) results.
According to Dr. Apaak, 57,259 candidates did not qualify for automatic placement. Of this number, 35,382 obtained Grade 9 in either English Language or Mathematics, while another 18,505 obtained Grade 9 in both subjects.
Despite their results in the two core subjects, the 53,887 candidates will be allowed to access the self-placement portal and select from schools and programmes with available vacancies.
The remaining 3,372 candidates did not sit for the examination and therefore have no results, making them ineligible for placement in the current exercise.
Dr. Apaak said the government would provide those candidates with another opportunity to resit the examination.
He encouraged candidates using self-placement to consider the range of available schools and programmes, taking into account vacancies, location and their individual needs.
The Deputy Minister also stressed that the CSSPS process is free and warned parents and candidates against paying individuals who claim they can secure or change placements.
He said placement resolution centres have been established at the regional and national levels to address genuine challenges encountered by candidates.
Dr. Apaak also announced that the CSSPS has been upgraded with an admission portal, allowing parents and candidates to complete admission processes and download admission forms without having to travel to their assigned schools.
