While Christians around the world were pondering over the most excruciating pain that Christ endured the day he was nailed to the cross over 2,000 years ago, A1 Radio has learnt the paramount chief of Chiana in the Upper East Region on Easter Friday, ordered some thugs to assault a seventy-year old man at his palace for what he claimed was breaking traditional norms.

Pe Ditundini Adiali Ayagitam III on Easter Friday allegedly ordered some thugs at his palace to beat up 70-year-old Kukorenia Kawurake to pulp for not taking off a cap he was wearing to signify respect for his skin.

Assembly man of Kayoro electoral area, Allou Edward Bagetewone who narrated the incident to A1 NEWS said the victim was moving from Kayoro where he hails from towards Chiana, all suburbs of the Kassena-Nankana West District of Upper East Region.

The assemblyman explained that the 70-year-old man was passing through the high way towards the Chiana Pio’s palace and upon sighting him close to his palace, the chief ordered some men at his palace to beat him up for not removing his cap as he approached the palace.

“The chief brothers went and took him [old man] from his bicycle and sent him to the chief at his palace. So when they got there, they started beating him up saying he was showing disrespect to the chief because if the chief is sitting outside and you are passing by the road then you were supposed to remove your cap”

According to the assemblyman even the chief of Chiana, Pe Ayagitam III himself “got up to beat the old man”

The assemblyman said after the old man was rescued, he was rushed to a nearby health center for treatment but was later taken to War Memorial Hospital in Navrongo.

“He was admitted for a day at War Memorial Hospital at Navrongo and they discharged him yesterday [Sunday]. But as we speak, he is still complaining that the neck is paining”

The action of Chiana Pio angered the people of Kayoro who massed up to revenge but were called to order by elders and the chief of Kayoro.

“What the chief has done is an insult to our community but not only the elder, because this is not the only incident, many of such incidents have happened. The youth mobilized and they were going there [Chiana Pio palace’s] but it took the intervention of our chief to calm them down” he said.

Mr. Bagetewone on behalf of the youth of Kayoro is therefore demanding justice for the old man for the brutality meted out to him.

“We will follow it to logical conclusion so that everybody will be satisfied. So if they are saying that anybody passing by the highway and the chief is sitting outside then they should remove their hats then they should equally let us know”. The assemblyman fumed.

The Navrongo District Police Commander, Superintendent Ebenezer Benson, confirmed the case was reported to his office on Friday and investigations have since commenced as the victim claimed he could identify three men as his attackers from the Chiana Pio’s palace.

Though Pe Ayagitam  III had agreed to speak to A1 NEWS later after we spoke to him and he said he was driving, subsequent efforts to get him proved futile as he refused to either pick up our calls or return same.
