Malicious NDC changed Jubilee House to Flagstaff House for political points – Abdul-Hamid

The change of name of the seat of government from its original name according to Information Minister, Dr. Mustapha Abdul-Hamid, was born out of malice by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration to score cheat political points.

“The Flagstaff House, where the British Colonial Commander was is still in tact. He [Kufuor] didn’t demolish it. If you enter the Jubilee House, you will see that place, it has been preserved for history. Then he built this Jubilee House and named it Jubilee House and then the NDC came, out of malice or hatred then they said no”

Former President John Agyekum Kufour constructed the edifice in 2007, the same year Ghana celebrated her golden jubilee and named it Jubilee House.

But late President John Evans Atta Mills after assuming office as president in 2009 changed the name to Flagstaff House, a name given to a colonial structure which used to house colonial military officers and was used by Ghana’s first president, Kwame Nkrumah as a seat of government before Independence.

The seat of government remained Flagstaff House until President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo reverted it to its original name, Jubilee House. This recent reversion has drawn some criticisms from a section of the public and the NDC.

But, Dr. Abdul-Hamid told journalists in Bolgatanga on Easter Friday that former Presidents Mills and John Mahama’s regimes changed and maintained the name to suit their political interest out of hatred on the achievement chalked by former President Agyekum Kufuor in putting up the edifice.

“Definitely, when people are recounting the history in the future, President Kufour’s named would be mentioned. So it is just malice and I think we should take malice out of nation building”
