The Ministry of Inner Cities and Zongo Development has commenced the construction of the Bolgatanga Astro Turf park in replacement of the Bolga Mobil green park at Dagweo, a suburb of Bolgatanga in the Upper East Region.
The contractor has moved to site with gravel to clear and form the site for the construction of the Bolga Astro Turf park.
The Ministry, as part of promoting sports in Zongo communities in 2018 awarded a contract sum of GHC 499,500.00 to Mr. Deri Sixtus for the construction, greening and fencing of the Bolgatanga Mobil park with a borehole.
But residents of Bolgatanga municipality outraged by the sub-standard construction of the green park instead of an Astro Turf park pressed on government to consider re-constructing the Mobil park for its intended purpose.
It is in line with this call that, the Ministry has awarded for the construction of the Bolgatanga Astro Turf park to Blaq construction limited.
Speaking on A1 Radio’s Day Break Upper East, Aid to the Minister of Inner Cities and Zongo Development, Fisial Ibrahim said, upon receipt of complains about the Mobil green park and subsequent audit of the project by the sector minister Mustapha Abdul-Hamid, they realized that, it did not meet the standard and design of those in other regions hence their decision to construct an Astro Turf park for the people of Bolga.
“When we(Mustapha Hamid) took over from Boniface Abubakar Saddique, as part of our engagement with the Zongo communities and chiefs’ the feedback we got from Bolgatanga was that, they were concern that the size of football pitch they constructed for them didn’t match up to what they saw in Greater Accra and Eastern regions. So, the minister promised to secure financial clearance to construct an Astro Turf for the people of Bolga.
We got financial clearance and have re-negotiated with a constructor so that, the desire of the people of Bolga will be attained that is, we should construct an Astro Turf park instead of a green park. So, what the contractor is doing is to construct an Astro Turf park”.
