Two accidents claim 10 lives on Bolgatanga-Bawku road

In a matter of five days, ten persons have been killed in two separate road accidents on the Bolgatanga-Bawku road in the Upper East Region. The latest accident occurred on Saturday May 12, killing three persons – two motorbike riders and a pillion rider on the spot while leaving others with different levels of injuries.

The accident which occurred at Tilli in the Bawku West District involved a Benz Bus, a Toyota Pick-up and two motorbikes. According to the account of an eyewitness, the two motorbikes were heading towards Zebilla with the Benz Bus ahead of a Toyota Pick-up from the Zebilla side heading towards Bolgatanga.

TopNews Ghana has gathered the Pick-up with registration number, GE-3425-18, ran  into riders on the motorbike (Yamaha DT) that was ahead of it killing one of them instantly. In an attempt to avoid hitting the pick-up, the second motorbike (Isuzu) veered off its lane and collided head-on with the Benz Bus with registration number NR-1057-P resulting in the death of both the rider and pillion rider on the Isuzu motorbike. Meanwhile, one of the riders on the Yamaha DT motorbike survived and is currently receiving treatment at the Zebilla Government Hospital.

Passengers on the Pick-up and Benz Bus survived but not without injuries. They were admitted and treated at the Zebilla Government Hospital.

The Member of Parliament for Zebilla who doubles as Deputy Upper East Regional Minister, Fuseini Adongo, visited the accident scene and called on drivers using that stretch of road to exhibit carefulness when plying it because of the ongoing contraction works.

On May 7, 2018, 7 passengers travelling on an Urvan Bus were killed when the bus crashed into a motionless vehicle at Yikurugu in the same district.

After the accident, the District Chief Executive of Bawku West, Victoria Ayamba, hinted the assembly will soon collaborate with the police in the area to toll broken down vehicles on the road to the police station and slap charges on owners to pay before collecting.
