Some Concerned Citizens of Tarkwa in the Western Region of Ghana, numbering over One thousand, on September 26, took over some roads in the Tarkwa-Nsuaem Municipality, to demonstrate their displeasure over the deplorable nature of the roads there.

The demonstrators gathered as early as 5:30am on Wednesday and took off amidst drumming and singing of war songs, which attracted the attention of others workers from their offices and even the market places to either join or watch demonstrators.

The angry demonstrators say, their roads are so bad and fall short of the status of the Tarkwa-Nsuaem Municipality, hence their decision to demonstrate, since their complaints behind doors, seem to have not been heard by the authorities responsible.

They wore red attires, red wrist bands and held placards some of which reads “we need good roads”, ‘’MCE , do something before you die”, “WE DESERVE BETTER” and “IT’S only in Tarkwa, that you will see big pot holeS”.

The Concerned Citizens of Tarkwa have given the Tarkwa-Nsuaem Municipal Assembly less than a month’s ultimatum, to do something good about the bad nature of the roads, and if nothing happens to improve the roads, they will mobilize more citizens to join in a mammoth protest that will last for one week. Meaning, road users will not have peace on the roads in Tarkwa.

Leaders of the group said their businesses are collapsing due to the bad nature of the roads, some have lost their jobs, while some citizens have lost their love ones, because they could not be hurried to hospital for quick health care, due to the cluster of deep potholes on the roads in the Municipality.

If comments from the leadership is anything to go by, then it can be concluded that the Concerned Citizens of Tarkwa are not ready to back down their demand for good road. They want the Assembly or Central government to give them good road and should not patch the potholes on the deplorable roads.

Meanwhile, a similar action is expected to take place in the Upper East Regional capital of Bolgatanga. The Bolgatanga Municipality has no good road, as all roads in the area have developed multi-clustered deep pot holes, making vehicular movement very difficult.

Following some media reportage, some of the pot holes especially, towards the Main Taxi Rank and the Ghana National Fire Service Office, have been filled with gravels, while the Urban Roads Department waits for Contractors working on the Bawku-Bolgatanga-Pulmakom to reach the Bolgatanga Township stretch of the road.
