Construction work has resumed on the long-abandoned Weisi–Sandema–Chuchuliga road, offering renewed hope to residents and commuters after nearly eight years of deterioration.
The project, now being undertaken by MyTurn Limited, is expected to deliver a bitumen surface under the government’s “Big Push Agenda,” aimed at improving critical road infrastructure across the country.
The road, a key transport link in the Builsa South District, has for years been plagued by heavy dust, poor accessibility, and declining economic activity, affecting traders, farmers, and transport operators.
“This road is critical not just for the people here, but for the entire supply chain of food distribution,” said the Member of Parliament for Builsa South, Dr. Clement Apaak, during a visit to the project site.
He said the resumption of work follows sustained engagement with the Roads Ministry and the release of funds to the contractor.
“Builsa South is known as a food basket,” Apaak added, noting that improving the road will ease the movement of agricultural produce and support local livelihoods.
Residents say the road’s poor condition has had a direct impact on their daily lives.
“We have suffered for many years,” said Hawua Ibrahim, a shea butter seller. “The dust alone is enough to make you sick. But seeing the machines working again gives me hope.”
The project had previously stalled due to financial constraints, leaving sections of the road in a deteriorated state.
Project engineer Donald Yeribu said funding challenges have now been resolved.
“The major issue before was a lack of funds,” he said. “With the release of funds and assurances from the MP, we are committed to completing the project with a proper bitumen surface.”
Residents remain cautiously optimistic.
“We are happy to see the contractor back, but we pray they complete it this time,” said Abenpaa-Lie Achaab, a mother of five. “We have waited too long.”
The government commissioned the project on April 9, 2026, marking a renewed effort to complete the road, which is expected to reduce travel time, lower vehicle maintenance costs, and improve access to markets once completed.
