Ghana National Association of Teachers has marked this year’s World Teachers’ Day in the Bolgatanga Municipality of the Upper East Region, under the theme: “The Right to Education means, the Right to a qualified Teacher: The Role of Stakeholders.”

A statement from the National office of the Unions in Education at the event to mark the World Teachers’ Day read by Mrs. Jean Asare Dartie on behalf of the National President of Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) said, the Day has been set aside since 1994 to celebrate the teaching profession and acknowledge those who have been making tireless efforts to help generations of learners realize their hopes and dreams through learning.

“Since learning is not just limited to knowledge acquisition, for effective learning to occur, learners need to be equipped with appropriate skills, hence, the need for qualified teachers in the classrooms.” The statement read.

Commenting on the Double Track System, Mrs. Dartie said it is clear that, the Unions are not reluctant to the government’s introduction of the Double Track System in some of the Senior High Schools, to absorb the increasing number of Students due to the free SHS Policy. Therefore, the Unions commend government for the introduction of the System, to save the huge numbers of students who are eager to access education at the Secondary level.

She also announced that, over 10,000 Teacher whose Promotion arrears and salaries have not been paid, will be paid.

Rector of Bolgatanga Polytechnic, Prof. Samuel Alnaa, noted that the usual saying that, the Teacher’s reward is in heaven, is now archaic and should not be accepted by any Teacher, because they too deserve the best, like Politicians and others.

“…in achieving the object of the theme, ‘the Right to Education means, the Right to a qualified Teachers’, we need as a people, to reconsider our old ways of doing things. We need to reposition ourselves to be able to craft new ideas and ways of doing things, to guide our development agenda. It is for this reason that, I wish to urge teachers to participate actively and dispassionately in deliberations on Teacher education and quality, since such efforts are geared towards making Teachers qualified and rightfully placed for National development.” Prof. Alnaa said.

He also urged stakeholders, especially the Teachers’ leadership, to partner with NGOs to be able to achieve better Teacher training and development opportunities.
