As part of activities towards renewing the spirit of Communal Clean-up in the Bolgatanga Municipality, the Upper East Regional Coordinating Council has partnered with the Inter-Party Committee, the Bolgatanga Municipal Assembly and CSOs for a Clean-up Exercise across the Municipality.
The Upper East Regional Minister, Paulina Abayage, who initiated the idea for an Inter-Political Party Clean-up Exercise, said Sanitation issues have to be taken seriously and never be politicized, especially when the effects of a filthy environment, does not discriminate on partisan lines.
She led the Regional Coordinating Council, members of some active Political Parties in the Bolgatanga Municipality, members Civil Society Organizations and the Media, as well as some women groups to clean the Bolgatanga new and old markets, the main lorry park. They also cleaned some chocked gutters along some principal streets and swept other public areas.
Hon. Abayage said it is the culture of many Ghanaian communities, including Bolgatanga to keep their environments clean at all times, adding that, Bolgatanga will have to return to its former days, when the Municipality was clean and attracted a National Award for being the Cleanest Municipality.
She urged Community leaders and Assembly members to lead their communities for General Clean-up Exercises on periodic basis and repeat the exercise till it becomes culture.
“We all have a responsibility to clean our environments always. We should not expect that some one will come and clean own communities for us, we have to clean it ourselves. Plastic waste is our major problem; now we all drink sachet water, unfortunately we litter the environment with the rubber. Please from now on, if we drink water, let’s keep the rubber and only drop it in a dust bin in town or at home. Let’s keep the rubbers out of our environment.” The Minister advised.
The Upper East Regional Youth Organizer of the National Democratic Congress, Lambon Azumah Abraham wants the Clean-up Exercise to continue, even if the Regional Minister doesn’t join, adding that, under the tenure of the late Professor Atta Mills, a similar exercise started and fizzled out because people were not committed to the Clean-up campaign.
The Regional Chairman of the Convention Peoples Party, Alhaji Huseini Ibrahim urged the Bolgatanga Municipal Assembly to adopt the Clean-up Exercise and repeat it frequently till the Bolgatanga Municipality becomes clean again.
Regional Youth Organizer of the New Patriotic Party, Latif Solomon was happy with the number of Political Parties and their members that joined the Clean-up Exercise, which he said is a sign of better Inter-Party relationship to be experienced in the Bolgatanga Municipality.
