A Principal Investigator of the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice(CHRAJ) in Bolgatanga, Edmond Alagpulinsa says despite continuous education, violence against widows persist and pose a serious worry to many widows and orphans as they go about their daily activities across in the Upper East Region.
According to him, on daily basis many cases of violence against widows and women in general are reported at the office of CHRAJ and believes that these violence need collective effort from authorities and members of the public to curb.
“There are still stories of abuses that when women share, you would be amazed and wonder if their abusers are human beings. On daily basis, cases of violence against women are reported to my office and these cases can only be fought and curbed, if authorities and the public work together.” He said.
The Principal Investigator was speaking at a sensitization programme organised by the Widows and Orphans Movement and Action Aid Ghana to draw public attention to the menace and the need to stop it.
He however, assured the widows that CHRAJ is ready to support them free of charge and so report persons or groups that subject them to torture and all forms of violence.
The Director of Widows and Orphans Movement, Abdulai Fati Abigail, also explained that gender based violence is still a worrying issue and is hindering many widows and orphans to progress in life and has to stop immediately.
She said her outfit in collaboration with Action Aid Ghana will continue to push further until abuse of widows and orphans is curbed.
