The Opposition National Democratic Congress is questioning why the Media in Ghana is mute about the compilation of a new voters register by the Electoral Commission of Ghana.

A Deputy Upper East Regional Communications Officer of the NDC ,Sunday Kampoli Casper in an interview with Samuel Mbura on Daybreak East said, it was baffling that those seen as “neutral” stakeholders are tight lipped on concerns raised about the decision by the EC to embark on a new voters registration exercise despite resistance from a section of stakeholders.

He holds the view that there was the need for the Media to come out with a position on this national discourse, since it was the ‘gatekeepers ‘ in the country.

“ i think it is incumbent on the GJA to speak on this ,what is your position on the new voters register? You are a key stakeholder in this country ,what is the media’s position on this new voters register , won’t it be appropriate for the media who are the gatekeepers to know and tell us that knowing what we’ve seen we have followed the last compilation of the 2012 register, we followed how it has performed from 2012 up to today . Why is the GJA not speaking ,Do you think we need a new voters register ? You allow this to be like NDC and NPP …Civil Societies have added their voices , you are not amplifying that . Majority of you are not embarking on the course that you are supposed to because of other reasons that we do not know”
“The media ,You understand this thing more than us , let us all come together because if anything untoward happens to us in this country all of us are not safe”

Mr. Kampoli pontificated that the failure of the Media to to take a bold stand on the raging issue was worrying and raises suspicion.

He however reiterated that the Inter Party resistance against the new voters register will pursue the EC legally to rescind its decision.

The Inter-Party Resistance Against the New Voters Register, a coalition of six political parties, is opposed to the plan by the EC to compile a new register for the 2020 general election, citing cost, time and credibility as the basis for its opposition.

The parties are the All People’s Congress (APC), the National Democratic Congress (NDC), the Eagle Party, the United Progressive Party (UPP), the United Front Party (UFP) and the People’s National Convention (PNC).

After demonstrations in Tamale on January 11 and Kumasi on January 21, 2020, the group has decided to suspend its planned nationwide protests until it meets with the Eminent Advisory Committee of the EC on the matter.

The group was scheduled to hold another demonstration in Accra on January 28, 2020.
