Bolgatanga the capital town of Upper East Region is one of the beautiful and peaceful towns in Ghana. In my 6yrs in the town,I have come into the conclusion that, the town and country planning and the lands commission have not done any good to the good people of Bolgatanga.
At the peak of this deadly pandemic covid19, the the municipal security taskforce in it’s quest to reduce human numbers in our market during market days is gradually leading to nothing, the narrative would have been simple if proper and better engineering planning was done right.Per planning principles, any suburb with a population of more than 1000 people should have the following:
- Mini Market
- Kids playing parks
- School
- Clinic/ Hospital
- Durbar grounds and
- Motorable roads.
The whole municipality has 2 markets, the old and the new one with a distance of about 2km far apart depending of the orientation you look at it.
Zuarungu which was carved from the municipality recently can boast of a recognized market. This is the only market those living around Kumbosco and those living around DVLA can visit as well.
A suburb like Yikine which is densely populated has no market. SOE one of the biggest suburb has no formal market. The same goes for Tindonsobligo which also has a high population of inhabitants.
Controlling crowd in this abnormal times would have been simple if all aforementioned areas had their own market. In any case, if I can get all I want within my locality what would I be doing in the central market??
Indeed,this pandemic in my singular opinion has come to unearth the problem some of us have been complaining for decades and I hope by the end of June ,our leader would learn and pick the positives that has come with this deadly corona virus.
