Former Upper East Regional Deputy Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Casper Sunday Kampoli, says party actors in the region are continuing to lobby government to prioritise the Bolgatanga-Bawku road as work resumes on the critical highway.
Speaking on A1 Radio, Mr Kampoli, who is seeking election as the NDC Upper East Regional Communications Officer, said the condition of the road remains a major concern for residents and requires sustained engagement with the government.
“We are daily lobbying, we are daily negotiating, we are daily putting pressure on the Roads Minister and then the government that this road, Bolgatanga-Bawku road, is a priority road,” he said.
Work has resumed on the 117.94-kilometre Bolgatanga-Bawku-Pulmakom road following the remobilisation of contractor Queiroz Galvão Construction. Mr Kampoli said residents should, however, not expect every development challenge confronting the region to be resolved within a short period, arguing that some infrastructure projects require funding and other preparatory processes before they can be completed.
He cited the proposed Bolgatanga airport as another major infrastructure project that required the resolution of land-related issues and competing interests before progress could be made.
President Mahama inspected the proposed airport site near Sumbrungu on August 13, 2026. According to the Presidency, procurement and final approvals were expected by October, with construction scheduled to begin before the end of 2026. (The Presidency, Republic of Ghana)
Mr Kampoli said the President’s visit to the site was important in consolidating stakeholder agreement over the project.
He further argued that major infrastructure projects should have adequate funding and the necessary arrangements in place before contractors are mobilised to avoid projects being started and subsequently abandoned.
Mr Kampoli expressed confidence that the government would follow through with the airport project and other infrastructure commitments in the Upper East Region.
