CK Tedam University of Technology and Applied Sciences, formerly University for Development Studies (UDS – Navrongo Campus) in the Upper East Region will train medical doctors and other allied medical professionals as plans are far advanced for the inauguration of the institute in the coming days.

Principal of UDS – Navrongo campus, Prof. Albert Luguterah, told host of Reporters’ Visit on A1 Radio, William Jalulah on Tuesday that lecturers and other staff of the university are very excited about the autonomous status of the institute and are ready to deliver on their mandate so as to make the university one of the topnotch universities in the country and the sub region at large.

CK Tedam University of Technology and Applied Sciences recently gained a parliamentary approval following announcement by the government in April 2019 that four public universities were to be renamed after a drafted Public University Bill was adopted and passed by Parliament without any amendments. Among the four institutions was UDS – Navrongo campus.

Prof. Luguterah said though the university will focus on technology and applied sciences; it will also run other programmes of relevance in the academia. According to him, when the university is inaugurated, management will begin working on accreditation for all its planned programmes. Meanwhile, all the ongoing programmes at the university will continue to run.

Touching on the resourcefulness of the university to run new programmes, the Principal said, “When you talk of whether the university is well resourced and ready to carry out such programmes, one should note that there is no institution on this planet earth that will ever say it has all that it needs. So yes, lecturers and workers are ready.”

On the fight against Covid-19, Prof. Luguterah was of the view that if the university had an autonomous status, it could have been one of the leading institutions in supporting the search for solution to the virus.

“We would have been leading in the fight against COVID -19; providing adequate testing kits, testing blood samples, and the rest. The point is, we have the men and the few facilities here too, are up to capacity which can train students to become meaningful in society”, he added.

He entreated the public to see the university as an institute for the whole country and not only for one particular region or district as the aim is to build a better and prosperous Ghana.

Meanwhile an interim Vice Chancellor has been appointed and is expected to start running the affairs of the university soon.
