The Upper East Regional Director of Ghana Health Service, Dr. Winfred Ofosu, has commended nature for it’s intervention in the fight to stop the spread of Cerebrospinal Meningitis (CSM).

According to him, the weather conditions usually facilitate the transmission of Cerebrospinal Meningitis among people the early rains experienced in the region to beat down the unhealthy weather conditions.

Dr. Ofosu presumes that there would have been high number of recorded cases of CSM in the region if the rains had not set in early.

His comments follow recent rain falls in the Upper East Region facilitating the reduction of the dusty weather conditions which could have eascalated the spread of communicable diseases.

“Dust plays a very important role in activating meningitis pathogens which individuals carry at the back of their mouths and noses which can easily transfer to or from others, but as the dust reduces due to the rains equally CSM also reduces amongst people.”He noted.

He also stressed that, “The dryness of the weather also reduces as immunity increases and that is important because it reduces the rate at which individuals may get micro-cracks at the back of their mouths and noses where the organism muscles would manage to enter the body.”

Dr. Ofosu however assured that though the region as of January up to date had a total recorded cases of 80 out of which 7 were confirmed dead, his outfit and as well as other relevant stakeholders are working hard to curb CSM spread.

Dr. Ofosu comments came when a group of young men and women in and out of the Bolgatanga Municipality made a donation of some medical items to some selected health facilities in the Upper East Region that aimed at curbing the spread of the Coronavirus.

The Director also cautioned the public to desist the stigmatization of relatives of infected persons of Coronavirus.

Dr. Ofosu who expressed worry about the growing trend in the region said if the stigma is not curbed it can possibly cause psychological trauma to the affected persons.

He indicated that the attitude does not only affect the relatives but will make people resistant to volunteer information in contact tracing and surveillance.
