District Chief Executive (DCE) for Bongo, Peter Ayimbisa Ayamga, has stated that, the current government under the leadership of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has given much priority to all sectors of agriculture in the country than it was done in the past years.

According to the DCE, the “inexhaustible” interventions and programs introduced by government includes, the Special Rice Sector Initiative, the Ghana Agricultural Sector Investment Program (GASIP), Fall Armyworm Combat Support Project and the Adaptation Fund Project (AFP).

These initiatives, including the famous Planting for Food and Jobs and the Rearing for Food and Jobs, he said are all aimed at transforming the agriculture sector which is the vehicle for economic transformation in the country.

“Over the past years, the agriculture sector has not received the attention it deserves and our poor farmers were left with limited options to break out of poverty. I want to assure our farmers that the government is doing everything possible to put agriculture on the path of transformation.”

Mr. Ayinbisa said this at Lungu while addressing gallant farmers in commemoration of the 36th National Farmers’ Day.

“Farmers today are better off than they were in the past years. Farmers are now able to cut down their production costs by half as a result of the PJF and other interventions.” He sated.

He entreated farmers to be more pragmatic and change the habit of solely venturing into subsistence farming and venture into agribusiness.

As the country goes to the polls in December, Mr. Ayimbisa who doubles the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Parliamentary Candidate for the Bongo Constituency, made a passionate appeal to everyone on the need to maintain peace, before, during and after the elections.

The Bongo District Director of agriculture, Edgar Drah on his part stated that, the department with insufficient resources coupled with the devastating effects of Covid-19, was able to reach out to farmers with technologies on improved crops and livestock production and quarantine practices.

He admonished the farmers to identify comparative advantage commodities where they could involve stakeholders to add value to the commodity to increase profitability.
