Climatic change will continue to be a threat to humanity but with much concentration and commitment, its effects would be minimal; said John Hoenyegh, the Nabdam District Director of Agriculture.

According to him, climatic change does not only threaten farmers but could end the human race if pragmatic measures are not taken by all and sundry.

In a bid to end the global menace, Mr. Hoenyegh has called on traditional leaders to use their influence in society to encourage tree planting; saying that would be the best bet to ensuring a greener environment on the planet as well as increasing food productivity.

The District Director made these comments in his message to farmers on the 36th National Farmers’ Day celebration held at Pelungu in the Nabdam District of the Upper East Region.

He said “I am using this day to urge stakeholders especially traditional leaders to see tree planting as a major step to ending climatic change. Going into 2021, traditional leaders should see the need to put laws that will encourage and promote tree planting. For instance, every month each household should plant a tree still the end of the year.”

He continued that “This year, as many of you were aware, the climatic change was so bad that it shifted the rain pattern in the beginning and later rain heavily to the point that it destroyed many of their farms. All these experiences were due to the change in the weather. And I believe we can put a stop to this if we encourage tree planting coming 2021.”

Encouraging the farmers, Mr. Hoenyegh urged them to begin devising new methods and technology to increase their yields in the coming years.
