The Upper East Regional Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Donatus Akamugre Atanga, has expressed confidence that his party remains solid in the region to secure the endorsement of voters in the upcoming December 7 general elections; even if they don’t campaign in the region.

According to Mr. Akamugre, though the Upper East Region is considered a strong hold of the NDC, their continuous campaign in the region was to show appreciation to the people of the region for their undying support to the party; and not necessarily to canvas for votes.

“If you have people who are supporting you, you have to show them respect. Though the region is NDC’s stronghold, you still have to accord the people respect that you value them; and in return, they will also give you the votes that they have.”

“It will not be good for us to say that because Upper East is our stronghold; therefore, we will just leave them without coming to greet them. That is why we are embarking on the campaign. Not that if we don’t do it we won’t win. We know that if we don’t even campaign in the Upper East Region, NDC will still win.”

He argued that looking at the statistics of elections since 1992, the party has been winning convincingly in the Presidential elections as well as a large number of parliamentary seats in the Region; and for that matter he has no doubt that this year’s election would be any different.

When asked if his party while in government has treated the people of Upper East Region fairly it terms of development, Mr. Akamugre said “NDC has performed better than the NPP in the Upper East. If you look at developmental projects that NDC had embarked on in this region, NPP cannot measure even up to one-third of it.”

He made these comments in an interview on A1 Radio’s Day Break Upper East Program; relative to a two-day campaign tour of the region by the Flag bearer of the opposition NDC, John Dramani Mahama.

According to the Regional Secretary, Mr. Mahama today, will visit some six constituencies in the eastern block of the region.

He is expected to end his campaign tour of the region with visits to the central and western parts; and subsequently proceed to the North East Region.
