Member of Parliament (MP) for Bolgatanga Central Constituency, Isaac Adongo, has said the next government of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) will complete the Bolgatanga-Sherigu-Naaga road.

He regretted that the dream of the erstwhile NDC government to construct the road was truncated because it left power in 2016.

He made this comment in his address to a gathering of NDC supporters as part of a three-day campaign tour of the Upper East Region by Flagbear of the party, John Dramani Mahama.

He said “The last time I engaged with you [John Mahama], I indicated that you needed to come to Sherigu for a reason. The reason is, when you introduced a contractor to the chief in 2016 for the construction of this road, the people of Ghana did not give you the opportunity to construct that road.”

“Fortunately, our opponents have started something. You [Mahama] will come and complete and tar this road to the end.”

Information available to A1 News indicates that; in the heat of the 2008 general election; when neither of the presidential candidates secured a majority of the votes in the elections of 7 December, the then candidate of NDC, Professor John Evans Atta Mills, during his visit to Sherigu to canvass for votes, paid a courtesy call on the chief of the area, Naba Aluman Apasinaba II.

The late Prof. Mills, on that occasion reportedly assured the chiefs and people of the area that should the NDC win the election in the runoff, the Bolga-Sherigu-Naaga road will be constructed.

However, the NDC, in its 8 years of being in government failed to construct the road as promised.

In 2016 the former president John Dramani Mahama, during his campaign visited the Sherigu Naba and once again promised to construct the road if NDC wins the 2016 election.

Luck eluded the party in the election; and it was booted out of office which paved way for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to take over.

The 30-kilometer Bolga-Sherigu-Naaga road was subsequently awarded to Araco Construction firm under the current NPP government; and A1 news can confirm that construction works are steadily ongoing on the site.

Even though the construction of the road has not stalled, the NDC believes it will complete it if the party is given another opportunity to govern the country.

It is expected that the roads, when completed, will facilitate free movement of goods and people, support economic growth, and enhance access to education and healthcare services among other benefits.
