There was almost a clash between supporters of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) over the commissioning of a newly constructed police station at Pelungu in the Nabdam Constituency of the Upper East Region.

The NPP supporters will not allow the Member of Parliament (MP) for the Area, Dr. Mark Kurt Nawaane, to commission the police station he (the MP) constructed for the community because according to them, the timing of the commissioning was wrong.

They said the construction of the facility had been completed earlier this year and was ready for inauguration long time ago but the MP left it till the election period.

According to them, the decision by the MP to commission the police station on Saturday, just three days to the general election was a deliberate attempt to score political points.

Speaking to the media, Assembly Member for the Damol-Tindongo Electoral Area, who is a known member of the ruling party, Charles Taleog Ndanbon, stated that Dr. Nawaane did not inform the NPP and the District Assembly before going ahead to commission the project.

Mr. Taleog stressed that the facility should have been commissioned long time ago and not this political season.

He continued that “This is a political season and he is the MP for the area; and Monday the people of Nabdam are going to choose their Member of Parliament, and I’m saying that this is not the right time for the MP to come and do a rally here.”

He further noted that it was wrong for the MP to decorate the yet-to-be commissioned police station with colors of the NDC party.

“I told them that putting their party colors there is wrong. Even if he wanted to do it, he is supposed not to put the party logo there.” He said.

An eyewitness told A1 News that the situation would have gotten out of control but for the intervention of the police.

The commissioning of the facility was therefore cancelled due to the incident.
