Ghana can’t develop if we don’t change the wicked kind of politics we do – Prof. Avea

A former Upper East Regional Minister under the erstwhile John Dramani Mahama administration, Prof. Ephraim Avea Nsoh, has cautioned that Ghana could have a retrogressive future if care is not taken about the kind of politics being played by some Ghanaians.

According to him, politicians of today are more concerned about their personal growth and sometimes their political parties; at the neglect of the poor people who elected them to power.

In an interview with A1 Radio, Professor Nsoh said “Politicians in Ghana are greed, yes! People have the mentality that as far as they are with a certain political party and it has won power, everything the country owns belongs to them.  Some will ever hijack projects that are of importance to communities. What is this; if not wickedness?”

“Such people often take politics to be a farm, where if their party comes to power, they will say it is time for them to harvest for their labor.”

Commenting on his experiences as Regional Minister, Prof. Avea maintained that despite the enticement to be corrupt, one of the key things he had had to learn has been the ability to be true to one’s principles and ideologies.

He said “Growing up, I was taught how to stand for the truth no matter the consequences. But here, I realized that people were rather the opposite of who I am. I could not agree with whatever they wanted or thought of being good. I could remember, one time a woman told me that she has asked for help from one contractor and according to her, the contractor said ‘the kind of regional minister the party brought here doesn’t sign documents when he hasn’t seen the work.’ So, he {the contractor} doesn’t have money for her. Just imagine; all that I want to say is that we as politicians should see the nation as our top priority, not our gains.”

He therefore called on politicians as well as Ghanaian youth to always stand for the truth for the betterment of the nation.
