It is now confirmed that the burial service for late former president, Jerry John Rawlings will take place at the Independence Square in Accra on 27th January, 2021 from 9:00 am to 11:00 pm, after an earlier postponement.

The body of the former president will be Laid-In-State from 24th to 26th of January, 2021 at the Foyer of the Accra International Conference Center (AICC) from 9: am to 5 pm daily.

This was contained in a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration sighted by a1radioonline.com.

There will also be a mass on the 26th of January, 2021 from 9:00 am to 11:00 am at the Holy Spirit Cathedral in Accra.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration in its statement said the ministry “avails itself of this opportunity to renew to all Diplomatic Missions, International Organizations and Honorary Consulates accredited to the Republic of Ghana the assurances of its highest consideration.”

The late president died in the early hours of Thursday, November 12, 2020 at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra.

Mr. Rawlings had been battling with ill-health for some days before his death, according to reports. His death plunged the country into mourning as many expressed shocked considering how energetic he was.

The funeral was scheduled for December 23, 2020, by the State but this angered the Anlo Traditional Council which wanted to be consulted.

The Council said the arrangements made at the time were not in accordance with the customs and tradition of the Anlo people.

The funeral rites of the late former president were then postponed indefinitely.
