Following President Akufo-Addo’s directive for all schools to resume after a 9-month long halt following the outbreak of the Coronavirus pandemic, schools in the Bolgatanga Municipality of the Upper East Region have resumed Friday, January 15, 2021; but without adequate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to prevent the spread of Coronavirus.

Visits to some schools in the Municipality by A1 news on the first day of reopening showed just a few students had reported to school and were engaged in clean-up exercises in preparation for the new academic term, beginning on Monday.

The students, who expressed excitement about the re-opening of schools, assured that they would comply with the safety protocols to prevent a widespread outbreak.

Some however admitted that they had forgotten most of the things they were taught in school before they went home for the break.

A1 News also noticed that some schools had been disinfected while others were yet to.

Head-teachers who spoke to A1 News off-record said their schools were yet to receive PPEs for both students and staff to enable them fully observe the COVID-19 protocols.

According to them, a delay in receiving the PPEs could discourage parents from allowing their wards to return to schools; a situation they believe could further heighten the impact of the pandemic on the pupils.
