Some residents in the Bolgatanga Municipality of the Upper East Region are questioning President Akufo-Addo’s decision to use the police to ensure strict adherence to the Covid-19 preventive protocols.

In his 22nd address to the nation on the government’s efforts to deal with the pandemic last Sunday, President Akufo-Addo said he had instructed the Inspector General of Police (IGP) direct officers to ensure that the general public observes the Covid-19 safety protocols.

But speaking in random interviews with A1 News, some residents of Bolgatanga wondered why the president himself does not wear face mask when addressing the nation or appears in the public space.

Robert told A1 News that “Before the Police can harass me of not wearing a nose mask, they should first call on the president to always wear nose mask when talking to us on TV. Leadership by example, I have never seen the president wearing a nose mask when he addresses us. Anytime he will want to talk on TV, he usually does not wear a nose mask. Why should I also wear a nose mask? Are we not all humans?”

According to Atiah Richard, “The President should have been talking about how he can help provide nose masks to rural communities and not to use the police. I don’t think anyone of us will want to get the virus, the thing is, some of us don’t have the resources to get the nose masks.”

“Is the president saying that at the time we were running around campaigning for him there was not COVID-19? If he thinks police is the way to go then, he should as well have it in mind to provide us with nose masks. If we have the nose masks, we will wear them even in our bedrooms.” Janet said.

Meanwhile, the Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Police Service in the Upper East Region, David Fianko-Okyere, during an interview on A1 Radio’s Daybreak Upper East program, has indicated strongly that his men will ensure that the President’s directive would be strictly adhered to by all and sundry.
