A development consultant and the new Patriotic Party’s two times parliamentary candidate for the Bolgatanga Central Constituency in the Upper East Region, Rex Asanga has added his voice to a tall list of Ghanaian speaking against custodian sentencing in Ghana.

Ghana’s list of punishment for criminals and others who mistakenly fall foul of the laws of the country includes custodian sentence, where persons found guilty of an offense are confined in a police cell or prison.

According to Mr. Asanga, in as much as he agrees that some offenders need to be kept away from society, there are many offenders of the law who are not harmful to society and should be made to serve in their communities.

“I think people should be made do some communal works as punishment for being guilty of an offense or flouting the law. That will help in the transformation we have been wishing to have after imprisoning people.”

Rex Asanga was speaking on A1 Radio on Friday, February 5, 2021, when he took his turn of the Personality of the week series on the Daybreak Upper East show with Samuel Mbura.

Touching on his defeat in the 2020 parliamentary election, Mr. Asanga, said he is confused as to what the people of Bolgatanga Central Constituency want.

“I just can’t imagine what our people want; because this government has done so much for this constituency and I don’t know what is not working for us.”
