19-year-old Illegal Gold Miner Sentenced to Five Years for Theft

After breaking and entering into a room at Kotokuom and stealing a sum of GHC1,500.00, 19-year-old Kwabena Awuah, an illegal gold miner has been sentenced to five years in jail by the Nkawie circuit court.

The convict allegedly committed the theft while the owner was out to buy food.

The Nakwie Circuit Court, presided over by Mr. Johnson Abbey handled the proceedings of the case. Kwabena Awuah pleaded guilty and was convicted on his own plea.

According to Detective Chief Inspector, Comfort Amankwaa, the incident occurred on June 2nd, 2020, around 1:00 pm. The complainant, on his way to buy food, locked his door. Upon his return, he realized his room had been broken into and his money had been stolen. The complainant then inquired in his neighborhood about the case. A witness then told him about having spotted Kwabena Awuah exiting his room.

The prosecution said the convict admitted committing the offense in his statement. Thus, he was charged and brought before the court for sentencing.
