Patrons at the animal market in Bawku on Valentine’s Day Sunday February 14, 2021, openly defied all safety protocols outlined by health experts to fight the spread of Covid-19.

President Akufo-Addo in his 23rd update on Covid-19, strongly reiterated regular hand washing and use of hand sanitisers, wearing of facemasks, observing social distancing among others, as measures put in place to contain the spread of the virus.

However, this was not the case when A1radioonline.com visited the animal market square in Bawku on Sunday. The news team observed that only 2 out of 20 patrons put on facemasks – a sharp violation of the president’s directive.

Social distancing protocol was also thrown to the dogs as the market was over-crowded. The news team did not see any designated point for hand washing in the market

Responding to our question on why he did not put on a facemask in the midst of the crowd, a goat and sheep dealer, Bukari Musah, claimed he had forgotten of it at home.

He said, “I usually put on the face mask but today I forgot to wear, though I’m aware of the consequences involved.”

Many of the patrons who spoke to our news team could not give any compelling reasons for their defiance to wear their face masks in the market square.

Meanwhile, a handful of them who had their facemasks on, did not wear them appropriately. While some had theirs on their chins and jaws, others had their covering only their mouths leaving their noses.
