The President of Women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (WiSTEM) at C.K. Tedam University of Technology and Applied Sciences (C.K.T UTAS), Dr. Mary Magdalene Pedevoah, has encourage female students in the Upper East Region to pursue mathematics and science related programmes at higher levels of education.

She said programmes such as engineering, technology and mathematics constitute the panacea to the development of every nation.

Speaking to A1news shortly after the launch of WiSTEM branch of C.K.T. UTAS, Dr. Pedevoah expressed worry over the situation where few women pursue especially engineering programmes.

According to her, WiSTEM was ready to reach out to pre-tertiary institutions in the Upper East Region to encourage girls to demystify myths that mathematics and science are difficult courses to study; and also help teachers to adopt methods that will encourage girls to develop interest for mathematics and science.

“It is meant to encourage young girls to take up science course in schools and also to support those who have taken up careers to remain in the area of science and technology. For students who are taking up science courses probably at secondary school levels, you need to be psyched to be interested in it so we have added the basic schools. We psych them so that when they get to the secondary school, they take up science courses so that when they are entering the university, they can branch into where we have the science, technology, engineering and mathematics programmes. And after school they should be able to take careers in science related areas.”

A lecturer at the Department of Food Science and Technology, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Profesor  Ibok Nsa Oduro who was the Guest Speaker at the launch of WiSTEM in C.K.T. UTAS, called on parents to encourage their female wards to take up science and technology in their academics

“I am encouraging parents to release their children to this area. They have a lot of potentials. When I see them riding bicycles, motorbikes it means that they understand machines, they can manage machines. So when it comes to engineering they can do. So please parents, support your girls to be educated so that they can also support in the development of the region.”

WiSTEM is an educational advocacy programme that aims at encouraging females from pre-tertiary to tertiary institutions to show interest in courses like Sciences Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. The programme seeks to demystify the idea held by many that such courses are difficult to study and hence are meant for males.

The launch of WiTEM had in attendance representatives from Takoradi Technical University, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), St John Bosc’s College of Education and Navrongo Senior High School among other tertiary and pre-tertiary institutions.
